PE Overview
Every child at St Thomas' Church of England Primary School will have a wide range of opportunities to explore and develop their skills and abilities in PE through both the curriculum and a wide range of activities. Each child will have the chance to take part in physical activity and sessions in EYFS, leading to PE lessons in KS1 and KS2. Initial skills and understanding from the early years are developed and then built upon to challenge and engage the children throughout their time at Newfield Park. PE lessons range from Dance and Gymnastics, to developing an understanding of a range of team games and their related skills as well as Outdoor/Adventurous activities and swimming. Some lessons are led by specialist sports coaches.
As well as PE time, children are also encouraged to take part in our wide range of After School Clubs that are being constantly updated and changed according to the interests and needs of our children. This offer of extra-curricular clubs is intended to encourage all children to pursue their love and enthusiasm for sport and activity as far as they can. We also encourage local sports clubs to interact and engage with our school, offering PE sessions to the children as well as After School Clubs and opportunities to join their teams.
Furthermore, to give the children the chance to experience competitive situations and enable time to challenge themselves, we also offer a wide range of opportunities to compete against other schools in a variety of sports and activities. These include activities such as football, cross country, cricket, rugby, athletics and many more and are offered to children of all sporting abilities.
Our children are also encouraged to take an active role in their physical education. To achieve this we have a range of strategies in place such as Pupil Voice on the Sports Committe, House Captains during Sports day, run a school tuck shop and children leading parts of their PE sessions and Command Joes.
